Duquesa Diving
I finally managed to pluck up the courage this month to try something I’ve
wanted to do for years but was always too nervous to try:
scuba diving.
I’m so glad I did! I had sensibly opted for the ‘
Discover Scuba’ introduction
course designed for people just like me to give it a try in a pool before
venturing out into the sea. After arriving at
Duquesa Diving’s training pool, I
met Steve my instructor who immediately put me at ease.

First off was a short theory lesson which has to be done before going into the
water, which explains how to use all of the equipment, hand signals and
safety guidelines. After this I changed into my wetsuit and got fitted out with
my equipment. Now at this point I was feeling really very nervous, although I
needn’t of worried, because you just work completely at your own pace. I
started off by letting the air out of my jacket and slowly sinking to the
swimming pool floor.
To start with I found myself breathing rapidly but you soon discover that there
is no need, you simply breathe as you would normally. It’s a very strange
feeling, being under the water but seeing and breathing as you would above
it. Once I had got used to this we tried a few exercises. First off was removing
you mouth piece whilst under water. It was a scary thought but with
reassurance from Steve, I gave it a go. It really wasn’t that bad. Next we tried
peeling back our goggles to allow some water in and practiced removing the
water by blowing through our noses. The point of these exercises is to save
having to come back up to the surface of the water constantly. By the time my
session was finished I was a converted man and I’m looking forward to taking
my next step of the course towards getting into the sea. If you like me have
always wanted to give this a go I highly recommend giving
